The rotation of polarization is caused by a property called optically active, which is inherent in quartz crystals and other enantiomers. There are “right-handed” and “left-handed” quartz, which rotate the polarization clockwise or counterclockwise respectively.
Because the rotator is c-cut, the rotation of polarization is independent of the rotation of the assembly around the optical axis, so the assembly is not sensitive to alignment. The only requirement is that the incident beam must be perpendicular to the aperture of the rotator.
